Overnights Over The Holidays

The holidays are a time for family, friends and traditions. They can also be a time of stress and exhaustion. If you're a nurse who is going to be working overnight shifts over the holidays, it's important to take care of yourself both emotionally and physically. Here are some tips for making the most of your holiday shifts.

The most obvious advice for any office, whether at home or away, is to make some traditions for yourself and your colleagues. Whether it's taking a group photo at the beginning of your shift, getting a small present for everyone on your team, or hosting a potluck dinner one night focusing on making these holidays something to look forward to can help you stay positive and focused. An office may not be a second home, but you can definitely make the space your own.

Another important aspect of working overnight shifts over the holidays is keeping in touch with family and friends, especially outside of work. Whether you're simply sending a quick text message to check in, calling loved ones on your break or setting up a video chat with family members who live far away, staying connected can help you feel more grounded and less stressed during this hectic time of year. Reaching out to say hello may be the bump someone else needs this holiday season.

Finally, it's important to take care of your mental and physical health during these holidays. This may mean eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of sleep or it may mean making time for exercise or meditation. Whatever works best for you, be sure to prioritize your well-being so that you can stay focused and energized throughout your shift. Taking care of yourself will help you care for others when the time comes.

Whether you're working holidays or simply spending time at home, remember to be kind to yourself and enjoy the season. After all, the holidays are about family, friends and making memories. And that's something we can all celebrate.
